In my home, we love gelato! We went to Italy last year and ate a bit too much gelato but, when in Rome!
The difference between gelato and regular ice cream is the density. Gelato is dense and doesn’t have the extra air that is put into the ice cream they sell in the stores.

I’ve been thinking about this weekend and how the Oscars, the grandest award show will be on this Sunday. The Oscars made me think of when I was in Italy and how grand the experience was just like the award show.
I decided, in the grand spirit of the Oscars, I would make homemade gelato that could win awards!
One of my favorite flavors of gelato is caramel cream. This is decadent, creamy, rich, and oh so delicious.
This gelato was made with Nellie’s free range eggs which are dedicated to the humane treatment of its hens. They are actually certified humane which makes me happy. Also, the hens live on free-range, small family run farms. It is a network of about 125 employees.
The yolks on Nellie’s free range eggs are a beautiful golden color. Looking very similar to the Oscar award😉
Homemade Gelato That Can Win Awards
If you're in the mood for something grand to eat while watching the Oscars, look no further than this Homemade Gelato made with Nellie's Free Range Eggs.
- 4 Large Egg Yolks
- 1/2 Cup Sugar
- 1 Cup Whole Milk
- 1 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
- 2 TBSP Pure Vanilla
- 11 Oz Bag Caramel candy (unwrapped)
- 1 Stick Butter
- 1 14 Oz Can Sweetened Condensed Milk
Combine the egg yolks and sugar together until fully incorporated and smooth. This should take about two minutes. Set this aside.
In a saucepan, combine the milk and heavy whipping cream on medium heat until the edges start to bubble. Turn the stove off and remove from burner.
Carefully whisk your milk mixture into the egg/sugar mixture until fully incorporated.
Pour the mixture back into your current pan you were using and let it heat up while stirring constantly. Heat it up until it coats the back of your spoon. This should only take about 5 minutes on medium heat. If you're worried, then use a candy thermometer until the temperature reaches 175 degrees.
Remove from heat and pour the mixture through a small metal mesh strainer or sieve to get a smooth consistency. Stir in the vanilla.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 8 hours.
Combine caramels, butter, and sweetened condensed milk in a saucepan on medium heat to melt completely together. Stir occasionally. When it is all melted, turn the stove off and remove from heat. Let the mixture cool completely.
Put it all together
Get your custard and add it to your ice cream maker and follow manufacturers instructions on freezing.
When the gelato is all done in the machine, place it in a Tupperware and place it in the freezer to set for a few hours. If you want it soft serve like, then no need to freeze.
Take your cooled caramel sauce and drizzle it over your gelato if you like. Enjoy!!
